Chapter Eight

As Titan followed Rynelle into the forest, his heart picking up speed, he had to check that he’d heard right.

“We need to take our clothes off?“ he repeated.

“Yes. There’s a nice brook nearby. We’ll sit next to it. The sound is very calming.“

He shot her an incredulous look and then heard it—the trickling of water. Rynelle shoved aside the fat leaves of a date palm to expose a little rivulet, which babbled along between the exposed roots of tropical trees. Rynelle stopped at the edge and paused to dip her hand into her little pouch of crystals. Titan stepped up beside her.

“Wear this,“ she said, handing over a crystal with a leather cord threaded through it. She took a matching crystal—a rose quartz, or something like it—and slung it around her own neck. He glimpsed a whole collection of crystals inside the pouch as she flipped it closed again.

“We’ll start with your crystal,“ she said. “And then⁠—“

“Wait,“ Titan said, tapping her pouch. “You said you need to do this communing thing with all of us? As in, three more pairs of crystals? How long will that take?“

“Oh, hours for each of you,“ she said.

Titan shook his head at her. “No. That’ll take too long. The enemy will find us by then.“

She pouted at him. “But we need to be able to speak to each other, in a party.“

A party. She used the actual word for it. “I can already do that, through my darksight,“ he said.

She blinked. “You can?“

“Yes.“

“Hmm. You’re already bonded to them, then. We can maybe attune all four pairs at once.“

With that, she retrieved eight more crystals from the bag and laid them over Titan’s head, then her own. Titan felt silly with five whole necklaces on, but he saw the value in having communication crystals. At the least, he could use them to make sure Lyrael wasn’t off murdering people indiscriminately all the time.

“I’m not sure it’ll work, but we can try,“ Rynelle said. “We’ll need a lot of spiritual connection to fill them all up. Take your clothes off.“

She didn’t wait for him to begin before she reached for the ties on her own corset and pulled the first one.

Titan caught her hand. “Wait. Is this... a sex thing?“

She made a face at him. “What? No! It’s meditation. You know, spiritual connection. Aligning the chakra.“

There she went again, with all that holistic human lingo. “Yeah, but... naked?“ Titan said.

“That’s the fastest way to connect. You have to lay yourself bare.“

Oh, I’ll be bare all right. And very, very distracted.

“You’ve done this with other people?“ he asked.

“Yes, but we weren’t in a hurry. We had time to connect with clothes on.“

Titan’s thoughts flurried like pages in a wind. His chest fluttered.

I used some time charges. A new partner gets me a refill. And I no longer have a cap on charges. She could bring me up to four charges, make me more powerful...

The thought sickened him a little. It felt almost like Eternis’s voice, ever pragmatic, never quite seeing humanity as valuable.
